Song I Wrote

Benjamin

When Benjamin uses his hands /  To create a world, He writes it down

For in these lands through hills and forests every animal does trust him

In these lands he wears the crown

But when he’s sitting in his kitchen / At the table, eyes turned downward

He has to hide

But what he doesn’t know—The creature in the darkness / Is him

The one that bites his nails at night

Benjamin wrote stories so the animals would trust him and he’d have a home

Where he’d have everything / But though the woods provide protection from the onslaught

In the waking world, Benjamin’s not the king

One day a hand struck Benjamin / So he went to the trees and ran / And in the dark he disappeared

And to the waking world, he seemed to be a story that would fade away after so many years

But when you see the faded marble / Marked with “Benjamin” remember / From the world he had to hide

For what he didn’t know—The creature in the darkness / Was him

The one that ground its teeth at night

Benjamin wrote stories so the animals would trust him and he’d have a home

Where he’d have everything / But though the woods provide protection from the onslaught

In the waking world, Benjamin’s not the king

So if you’re walking through the headstones in the moonlight and you see the faded marble “Benjamin”

It would be kind if you could place a crown upon it, in memoriam, so we’d remember him

Benjamin wrote stories so the animals would trust him and he’d have a home where he’d have everything

But though the woods provide protection from the onslaught / In the waking world,

A child’s not a king
